三重県津市生まれ。カナダ、バンクーバー市に在住、活動。

三重県立津西高校卒業。立教大学文学科ドイツ文学科学士号、アルバータ大学芸術デザイン学部版画科修士号（カナダ　アルバータ州　エドモントン）。
1994年にロータリークラブインターナショナルの奨学生としてカナダに留学して以来カナダ在住。2002年頃よりバンクーバーを拠点にしながらアメリカ合衆国、タイ、メキシコなどのアーティストレジデンスプログラムで制作活動を続ける。2005年以降は、カナダ芸術協会などからの助成金主にインドで独自のテーマでインド各地を調査し制作、アーティストレジデンス、個展での作品公開をつづける。2017年より台湾、韓国で個展、レジデンス。カナダ芸術協会などからの助成金、受賞歴多数。

カナダのバンクーバーを拠点に世界を旅しながら作品を制作する井早智代のアートの特徴を一言で述べるとすれば、それは地球上のすべての生を持つ生き物への慈悲の精神ではないかと思う。立教大学でドイツ文学と東洋哲学を学んだ後、カナダのアルバータ大学院で版画を学んだ井早は、2005年より、チベット文化圏である北インドのラダックに、この13年間で16回も通い、そこに住むチベットの亡命者との交友を通じて、チベットの仏教における哲学を基にした世界観を、版画やドローイング、アニメーションなどの多岐にわたる素材と技法を使って制作している。
2008年の北京オリンピックを契機に悪化し、現在も続くチベットの人権問題に対する焼身抗議に胸を痛める井早は信仰のために自らの命を犠牲にする人々のために絵を描き続け、人間の生死の循環と自然とのつながりについての深い考察から、この数年の間に「ダラムサラからのドローイング」 ”Drawing from Dharamsala”を発表し、そのシリーズに続く「目・火・水」“Eyes Water Fire” をカナダや台湾、メキシコで発表してきた。
井早の作品の背景には、21世紀に入り悪化の一途をたどる人種、人権問題や、大量消費社会における貪欲な人間が生み出した様々な社会問題に対する批判的精神を読み取ることができるが、それを声高に主張するのではなく、むしろ亡命を余儀なくされたチベットの難民たちに寄り添い、食住を共にして生きる人生を選んだ井早の慈悲深いまなざしが通貫している。井早のアートは政治や社会問題の波に翻弄されながらもささやかに、信心深く生きる個々の人々への愛と友情にあふれている。今回若山美術館に展示される「祈り　目・火・水」 ”Paths- Eyes Water Fire”は、近年発表している「目・火・水」シリーズの続編のインスタレーション作品で、美術館の空間を、生と死の二つの空間の行き交う場とし、井早がこれまで出会ってきた人々の様々な人生の旅へと私たちを導くことになるだろう。

Born in Tsu, Mie, Japan. Lives and works in Vancouver, Canada.

IHAYA Tomoyo was born in Tsu-City, Mie, Japan and is based in Vancouver, Canada. Her works have been featured in solo and two-person shows in South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, Mexico, India, Canada, and the United States. She has also participated in artists’ residencies in Thailand, India, Taiwan, and Korea and has been awarded numerous grants from the Canada Council and the British Columbia Arts Council. Her work is held in public and private collections nationally and internationally. Ihaya holds a BA ( German Literature) from Rikkyo University, Tokyo, and an MFA from the University of Alberta, Edmonton.

Based in Vancouver, Canada, Ihaya Tomoyo has been making art and traveling around the world. Her works would be best described with her compassion for all lives on the earth. After studying German literature and Eastern philosophy at Rikkyo University, Ihaya moved to Canada and studied print making and received her MFA at the University of Alberta. Since 2005, Ihaya has been intensively visiting Ladakh, India (the Little Tibet) 16 times in 13 years to call this place to her second home. Ladakh is where is the Tibetan cultural area is located. Using various media and methods such as print, drawing, painting, and animation, Ihaya has created numerous artworks on the Tibetan philosophy and the global worldview through her observations and friendships with the local Tibetan refugees.
Recently, the artist presented “Drawing from Dharamsala” and the series called “Eyes Water Fire” in Canada, Taiwan and Mexico. These series of artworks are her artistic response and one could say, a healing process for her devastation to the ongoing issue of human rights of Tibetan people. The drawings also speak to the self-immolation protest of the Chinese government occupying their homeland, and its oppression of Tibetan culture and religion. Based on her deep examination on the human life cycle from the birth to death, and its relationship with nature, she has continued to make portraits of Tibetan people who sanctified their lives for their beliefs.
In the background of Ihaya’s works, we can read her critical views on the ongoing social problem of today in the 21st century, such as human rights, racial discrimination, and human greed in our present global consumer society. Ihaya doesn’t insist on these statements loudly about. But rather, we could feel that she has nestled close to the Tibetan refugee by sharing her life with them in the everyday actions of eating and living together. Ihaya’s artworks remind us of her compassion and love for the people whose lives are sacrificed by this wave of social problems, but still continue to live humbly and devoutly.
The“Paths- Eyes Water Fire” exhibited in Wakayama Art Museum is a new installation work of a continuation of a “Eyes Water Fire” series. Ihaya makes the gallery space divided into two conceptual places where life and death comes and goes, and would lead us to travel into various lives of the people whom she shared friendships.
