KASAHARA Emiko

Born in Tokyo, Lives and works in Tokyo.

Kasahara Emiko completed the Master’s degree program at the Graduate School of Art and Design, Tama Art University (MFA). Her activity was based in New York from 1995 to 2014, and then in Tokyo up through today. She has adopted a diverse range of mediums, such as sculpture, objects, photography, film, and action. She utilizes materials that have an inorganic nature, while also being reminiscent of feminine textures, such as marble, silicone rubber and synthetic hair. Kasahara produces works based on concepts that derive from humorous ideas, via capturing the world with a calm mind and a sense of subtlety.

Early in her artistic career, her works were centered on matters that questioned the relationship between women and society. In recent years, Kasahara has broadened her concept to concerns that question systems that regulate society, such as colonialism and religion, through which she developed her work in the form of a contextualized installation that is based on fieldwork. Over a ten-year period from 2005 to 2014, she spent her time researching and photo-documenting offering boxes in Christian churches in eighty-five countries. She created the installation OFFERING, composed of sculptural works based on the archive of her documentation. In addition, for her installation K1001K, she excavated fragments of ceramic hand grenades, which were produced in Japan near the end of World War Two, and then baked the missing parts of the grenades using ceramic. Those parts were arranged in the venue along with her archaeological documentation. Kasahara is currently in the midst of an ongoing project in which coins that have lost their value of use are flattened by railway cars of five train routes that symbolize modern hegemonic systems.

Kasahara has participated in numerous international and gallery-sponsored exhibitions, including 3rd Gwangju Biennale (2000); Yokohama Triennale 2001; 14th Biennale of Sydney (2004); CHIKAKU, Kunsthaus Graz (2005); Yokohama Triennale 2014; and PARASOPHIA: Kyoto International Festival of Contemporary Culture 2015. From 2014 to the present, she has served as professor in the Department of Sculpture at Tama Art University.
