キム・ウジンは映像、ドローイング、インスタレーション、そしてサウンド・アートなど、多分野にわたって制作するアーティストである。彼女の作品は、外部の観察者として、ある社会の中からつかまえた小さな疑問から出発する。彼女はその疑問の中から特定の「装置」をみつけようとする。それらは日常生活のなかで個々の人の内部にひそやかに作用するものだ。彼女の目的は、「善／悪」、「真実／虚構」といった、われわれが確固としたものだと信じる何かの中に、断絶を生じさせることなのだ。

彼女の近年の作品である「記憶プロジェクト」は、社会的枠組みを作る装置として言語に焦点を当てている。このプロジェクトは、消滅しつつある言語や言語状況の変化に関する人々の記憶を収集するものである。2つの世界大戦を経て、アジア大陸の劇的な社会構造の変化に伴い、アジアでは多くの言語が失われていったし、そうした動きは今も世界のあらゆる地域で続いている。同じような歴史を共有するアジアでも、多くの地域で母語が徐々に消滅していった。異なる国や民族であるにもかかわらず、この共通する喪失の経験は彼らを有意義なかたちで結びつけている。さらに近年、喪失した言語や消滅しつつある言語をめぐる彼女のプロジェクトは発展しており、現在はデジタル世界への急速な移行と、加速する言語のデジタル消滅についてのプロジェクトに取り組んでいる。消えゆく言語を媒介とするこのプロジェクトは、私たちが見逃しているもの、他者とみなされているもの、周縁的とされているものを検証し、問い直すことを目的としている。
彼女は以下のさまざまな美術館や施設で作品を発表している。韓国、ソウル市のキム・ジョンギュン美術館（2002年）、オルタナティヴ・スペース・ループ（2019年）、龍仁市のナムジュン・パイク・アートセンター（2020年）、香港のパラサイト（2018年）、日本、東京のトーキョーアーツアンドスペース本郷（2017年）。

KIM Woojin is a multidisciplinary artist working across film, drawing, installation, and sound. Her work starts with the small questions that she, as an observer, catches in certain societies. She tries to find specific dispositifs among these questions, which work secretly within individuals in everyday life. She aims to create a rupture in something we firmly believe, such as ‘good/bad’ or ‘true/false’.

Her latest project, ‘Memories Project’, focuses on language as a dispositif that creates social frames. This project collects people’s memories about disappearing languages and changes in language situations. After enduring two World Wars, many languages in Asia were lost as the continent underwent dramatic social shifts, a trend that continues today in many parts of the world. Sharing a similar history, Asia also witnessed a gradual extinction of native languages in many parts of the region. Despite representing different nations and races, this common experience of loss binds them in meaningful ways. Recently, expanding on her project about lost or disappearing languages, she is currently working on a project about the rapid transition to a digital world and the accelerating digital extinction of languages. Mediated by vanishing languages, the project aims to examine and question what we miss out on, what is regarded as the other, and what is defined as peripheral.

She has presented work at several institutions such as the Kimjongyung Museum (2022), Alternative Space Loop (2019) in Seoul, Nan Jun Park Art Center (2020) in Yongin, Korea, Para Site (2018) in Hong Kong, and Tokyo Art and Space Hongo (2017) in Tokyo, Japan.
